Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, a day when Union troops of the U.S. Civil War reached Galveston, Texas and announced the war’s end. This event marked the day that slaves were free. Juneteenth is considered to be the oldest known celebration that acknowledges the end of Slavery in the United States.
